Thomas Houston, born in Donegore, Ireland in 1803, grew up in the ministry of William Stavely, a prominent figure among Irish Covenanters. His early religious devotion led him to study at the Belfast Academical Institution in 1819 and later to theological training under Andrew Symington. Licensed to preach in 1826, Houston was called to serve at Knockbracken in 1828, where heremained for 54 years. He edited The Covenanter for 30 years, during which he engaged in theological debates, notably over the duties of civil magistrates. Houston also played a key role in the 1853 covenant renewal at Dervock and, from 1854 until his death in 1882, taught Church History and Theology at the R.P. Theological Hall in Belfast. A prolific author, his books include, “Parental Duties” (1844); “The Judgment of the Papacy” (1851); “A Memorial of Covenanting” (1857); “The Lord’s Supper: its Nature, Ends and Obligation” (1878); “The Dominion and Glory of the Redeemer” (1880); and “The Intercession of Christ” (1882). Many articles and smaller works were collected in a four volume set, including “Works, Doctrinal and Practical”.
